The Albino Foundation with the support of Sightsavers held a One-Day Capacity Building Workshop for Nigeria Labour Congress Union Members on the 23rd of October 2021.
The topic was on Improving Accessible Employment Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities.
Mr. Rasak Adekoya, the Program Director at Sightsavers, a scholar of diverse things, and also a person with visual impairment delivered a lecture on Disability Inclusion in the workplace.
In his lecture, he mentioned that PWDs in Nigeria constitute 15% of the global population, which puts the population of PWDs at over 30 million.
He went on to state that economically , as well as social terms, PWDs in Nigeria are among the poorest of the poor. In his words he said “they are often regarded as unproductive and incapable of contributing to the society, and rather, seen as constituting an economic burden on the society at large, which leaves them in a vicious cycle of poverty.
Whereas, world bank estimates that countries that invest in people with disabilities increase their GDP by 3.8%”.
Persons with Disabilities want to feel included, in all spheres of the society. They are intelligent and productive people if given the opportunity.
All employers should integrate Disability Inclusion guide into their curriculum to ensure Inclusivity For All.
